Two drivers achieve new personal best times at Spitfire Raceway

Despite a strong side wind at the Straightliners event at Spitfire Raceway, Perranporth, Cornwall the warm weather brought out a good turnout of spectators, car clubs and competitors.

Up to 1600CC
It was a battle for top honours between father and son, Colin and CJ Matthews. sharing the 1380cc Leyland Mini it was CJ who pipped dad to top honours in the class with a 14.21sec run to Colin's 14.37secs.

Up to 2000CC
First of the drivers with a new personal best, and achieving his stated aim of getting a run under 12secs, Francis Gillett, driving his turbo Focus engined Westfield, posted an 11.97sec run to take home the class trophy. Francis also picked up the West Country Vehicle Movements Trophy trophy for Fastest Rear Wheel Drive car.

Over 2000CC

Knocking on the door of a 10sec run Jamie White, driving his Subaru Impreza, was 1.2secs quicker than the runner up in the class taking home the trophy, of which his gran will be very proud, for a run of 11.06secs also achieving the fastest 60 foot of the day at 1.76secs.

Mark Smith, running with a new steering damper on his ZZR1400 Kawasaki, knocked .34 of a second off his previous best Spitfire Raceway time running a 10.15 secs to head off home with the West Country Rider Training trophy. Mike Gray was second just pipping Darren Cole by 1/100th of a second, 10.64 to a 10.65 .

Trophies again supplied by Vince Hill at West Country Rider Training of Plymouth. It was once again 1/100th of a second splitting first and second in class. Kevin Booth on his ZX12R Kawasaki 10.60secs to Tim Hinton,s 10.61secs riding his Turbo GSXR Suzuki.

The second driver with a new personal best, Chris Priddle, with his Robert Cox Engineering built 16valve engined VW Caddy, went across the quarter to post a 12.86sec to win the class. Much modified but still street legal Chris trundled past us on his way home along the A30! Thanks for the thumbs up!

John Gaisford beat brother Chris to top honours driving his Chevy Corvette with a best of 13.60secs

Nice to see the older cars still being run in anger. Treve Flamank drove his Wilys Coupe, running 7.6 litres of American V8, to an interesting ride, Spitfire Raceway has a bumpy surface, 13.85secs being respectable.

Riding his Suzuki GSXR 1000 Richard Lee bagged the trophy with an 11.19sec best run.

Trophy for Best Of Show was awarded to David Bond and last but by no means least trophy for Best Club Stand was won by 50th Degree
